Personal Umbrella Coverage
Umbrella coverage is a form of insurance that adds protection beyond the monetary limits of the standard automobile or homeowner’s or renter’s policy.
There is little doubt that the number of liability lawsuits and the size of resulting judgments have grown exponentially over the past decades. Judges and juries in such cases have awarded ever-growing amounts to plaintiffs for at-fault auto accidents, injuries suffered in homes and businesses due to some form of perceived negligence and even slander and libel. The cost of defending oneself legally against such catastrophic judgments has also risen commensurately.
Umbrella coverage is a form of insurance that adds protection beyond the monetary limits of the standard automobile or homeowner’s or renter’s policy. Personal umbrella policies essentially “take over” when the limits of your home or auto policy are reached. Personal umbrella coverage is usually sold in $1.0 million increments (up to $5.0 million) to supplement the coverage of both home and auto policies simultaneously.
Personal umbrella coverage is a relatively inexpensive form of protection to increase the amount of protection you have from large judgments against you. Most companies do require a moderate amount of coverage for home and auto liability before offering personal umbrella coverage, however.
Personal umbrella coverage also protects the policy holder from libel and slander judgments, legal defense and court costs for a covered loss, and personal liability costs for accidents on or off your premises, world-wide.
Bryant Asset Protection strongly recommends consultation with our professional staff before you make final decisions on obtaining umbrella coverage, although it is highly recommended for the majority of clients with moderate to high assets.
